History of Border Collie Corgi Mix

The Border Collie and the Corgi are the two purebred dog breeds from which the hybrid breed known as the Borgi was developed. Despite extensive investigation, surprisingly little is known about their past.

The Border Collie became popular in the 1800s and originated in the British Isles. Border Collie is said to have also come from two ancestors, which are herding dogs from Britain and Viking raiders. While Corgi also came from a herding breed this time in Belgium. It was said that it came from a common ancestor, Pembroke, and Cardigan Corgi, during the 18th century.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi, which descends from the other half of Borgi’s parents, has a rich and passionate background. Legend has it that this dog originated in lands inhabited by fairies and elves. There’s a legend that says the family who has a Welsh terrier should expect nothing but love and devotion from the pet.

Historians, however, claim that Welsh Corgis have actually descended from Swedish cattle dogs known as “the Vallhunds.” Both the United Kingdom Canine Association and the American Kennel Club officially recognized this breed of dog.

Appearance of Borgi

What does a Borgi look like? What are its features? Are they truly a mix of dog breeds?

First, their eyes are usually round and have a dark color. Truly an eye-catcher that captivates the hearts of many. Corgi noses usually have a black or brown color. They have pointy and floppy ears and are triangular-shaped. They also have elongated bodies and short legs. Lastly, their tails are usually long.

Some Border Collies Corgis mixes are as stocky as their Corgi father, while others are more like typical Border Collies. The resulting dog will often have short legs plus a small robust physique as a result of this trait.

With its rugged good looks, this hybrid exudes an aura of assurance. The Borgi also has a strong sense of self-reliance, which allows it to take pleasure in its own presence and prevent it from ever experiencing the ill effects of isolation.

Intelligence of Border Collie Corgi Mix

Borgis are intelligent dogs too and are already considered as world’s smartest dog. They are hybrid dogs with a very high IQ.

Borgis are said to be very protective, hardworking, playful, and fun to be with dogs. There’s this moment when they suffer from separation anxiety or “sepanx”, simply because they don’t want to be left alone for hours. They are also considered independent hybrids that usually have a very active lifestyle. Oh! Such cool dogs there.

Family and Border Collie Corgi Mix

Border Collie Corgi Mixes are also the type of breed that is very protective when it comes to family. For instance, they will bark whenever they hear unusual sounds that will catch their attention, and, in that way, they can protect their family.

Borgi also has this strong instinct and really, they can create and make family companions. But they do get along with other pets since they are friendly dogs because they are well trained and can do socialization.

Other Pets and Borgi

A Borgi is not the most sociable canine, and this extends to its relationship with other animals. You can’t expect Borgi to be comfortable meeting people outside of his family until he has had ample opportunity to socialize with other animals.

You can accomplish this goal rapidly by taking your Borgi for walks in the park, taking it to animal playgroups, having friends around with pets, or even just showing it movies of other animals. Your Borgi’s socialization and behavior around other animals will improve the more you expose it to them.

Strangers and Border Collie Corgi Mix

When you have a Borgi, you’ll never have to worry about someone unexpectedly showing up at your door because they’ll be on high alert all the time. Though at first, they bark to warn you that someone is approaching. In an effort to garner as much interest as possible from the guest, they will quickly begin introducing themselves.

Training and Exercise and Border Collie Corgi Mix

Border Collies and Corgi both need to have at least 40-60 minutes of daily exercise as part of their mental and physical exercises. They are very energetic, and they are actually called athlete dogs. They need to do this exercise thing daily because if not and will stay at home the whole day, they will destroy something and will get bored.

Other training exercises that are suggested for Borgi are more likely into sports. They swim, walk, and play games to keep them healthy. Sometimes they are independent and might lose interest.

These dogs are intelligent, quick-footed, and highly trainable since they are excellent at following commands and picking up new ones. The earlier you start introducing your dog to different animals, people, and environments, the better they will be able to socialize and adjust to their surroundings.

The greatest approach to get rid of your dog’s stubbornness is to train them and manage them with love, support, and a good attitude as they go through their training. Because of this, he will come to regard you as a friend, and he will gladly carry out your commands.

It is the obligation of the pet parent to begin providing their dog with fundamental obedience training as soon as possible after the dog is acquired. Your canine companion will have a more even temperament if you instruct him to dependably respond to fundamental instructions like “sit,” “down,” “come,” and “stay.” Teaching your dog these skills will take some time and patience on your part.

Taking Care of a Borgi

There are many ways to take care of a Borgi. From head to foot, they also need to clean up. Taking care of a Borgi can be expensive but genuinely worth taking care of.

First, on emotional matters, we need to understand them, since they cannot speak, they can only bark, and they too sometimes feel irritation and all. So, we probably need to know and understand their feelings as well as their situation. They should be disciplined as well.

Next, Borgis’ owners should take care of their fur so much that it actually grows very fast.

Health and Diet of a Borgi

According to studies and research, we can give them dry dog food. It will boost their stamina since they are active dogs. They can get a lot of daily protein from this kind of food.

Border Collie and Corgi mix can also eat meat like fish or salmon in particular. You can also give them beef, and chicken which serve as the top priority of food for them because it is easy to digest. Fruits and veggies are also great suggestions for dairy products such as cheese and yogurt. Eating this kind of food will give them enough energy for the day and that will restore them.

They need to eat from at least 6 AM and 6 PM daily. One cup of food at least 3x a day, so it must be consistently on time to avoid problems in the future. All of those are good suggestions but on top of it, they should always be recommended by their VET.

Our pet is not always on a good status or with a healthy lifestyle every day. We know that we should take care of them, but we need to also look at and observe their health and diet. Borgi is said to be prone to not-so-good healthy conditions.

Some health issues of this mix also need to be addressed with a good balance of diet, just like us, so we spend time and effort to know what we need and what to do.

Health Issues of Border Collie Corgi Mix

First is Achondroplasia, a structural health issue of a Corgi that can be passed with other dogs of the Border Collie Corgi Mix. Then, there’s also Intervertebral Disc Disease. A spinal condition that often ruptures leads to severe pain. In some cases, it may lead to paralysis.

Other health issues are eye conditions which include degenerative myelopathy and Progressive Retinal Atrophy. Canine Hip Dysplasia and Congenital Deafness are also some other health issues to address upon.

So, what to do to keep our pet Borgi healthy, and hospital-free? First and top of the list when something is up on them, we need to make sure that they have regular checkups and visit their vet. Know the right food for them, give them the proper medicines, and exercise. We should also prevent them from running up and down the stairs, jumping here from anywhere, to avoid injury

Lifespan of a Borgi

In today’s living, when we decided to have a pet, it’s not always of course to have a lifetime buddy, as the song goes out because a Borgi or Border Collie Corgi mix has a potential lifespan from 12-14 years. It is indeed a long life actually for them.

Grooming of Border Collie Corgi Mix

They also need to be groomed daily as much as possible. Why? Simply because of the double coat of the Corgi and the long hair of the Border Collie.

Its fur needs to go daily brushing, most of the time during its shedding season. They need an everyday brushing of hair due to its thickness of it. Remember that cleanliness is the number one rule of all concerning our pets. Never get them dirty.

We need also to bathe our dog when it is necessary. It keeps the oils on his coat shiny and natural. Brush their teeth at least three times a week and cut their nails regularly. Truly and highly recommended.

Male Vs Female for Borgi Mix

Then how can we find out this time if the Borgi Mix is male or female? There may have been differences that we should be aware of especially when they are not spayed yet. But, it is very noticeable for both of them since they have the same physique when you first look at this dog breed.

Basically, the male Borgi weighs 25 to 30 pounds, and the female Borgi weighs 20 to 25 pounds.  The male Borgi stands around 13 to 18 inches while its female counterpart falls under 11 to 16 inches.

Males are often larger and heavier than females and have more stable temperaments. They also tend to show more affection toward one another than females do, and they have a more mischievous side. Affectionate and playful behavior is not limited to males; females are capable of displaying these traits as well.

However, they do so only when the mood strikes them. Borgis that have been spayed or neutered are prone to have temperaments that are nearly impossible to differentiate from one another. Male Borgi is also easier to handle than females because they are more devoted to their owners.

Cost of Border Collie Corgi Mix

If you are located in the United States, the Border Collie Corgi mix costs roughly $1000 – $2000.

Truly an expensive one, because its parent breed is more expensive than the other mixed breed. Sometimes it depends on the price of their parents, both Corgi and Border Collies are truly pricey.
